LG is maintaining its focus on the development of 6G communications technology. Recently, Kim Lae-young, Senior Research Engineer at LG’s CTO Office, was appointed Vice Chair of the Service and System Aspects (SA) plenary at the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
The 3GPP is responsible for setting global standards for mobile communications, including 5G and 6G. The SA plenary specifically addresses system architectures, service scenarios, requirements, and security mechanisms for these technologies.
This appointment places LG in a position to contribute to the ongoing evolution of 5G-Advanced and the development of 6G standards.
LG has also held leadership positions in other 6G initiatives. The company has served consecutive terms as the chair company of the Applications Working Group in the Next G Alliance, a North American 6G technology initiative led by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions.
LG’s stated objective is to accelerate 6G research and development through active participation in global standardization. The company anticipates that 6G technology, characterized by ultra-fast speeds, low latency, and AI integration, will be essential for its future products and services in areas such as AI-powered smart homes, mobility, and smart factories.
LG’s 6G research and development activities include establishing the LG-KAIST 6G Research Center in 2019. The company has also formed research partnerships with institutions such as Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute and Korea’s Research Institute of Standards and Science. Since 2022, LG has hosted the 6G Grand Summit, a forum for experts in next-generation connectivity.
LG has conducted demonstrations of 6G technology, including a 500-meter outdoor terahertz (THz) wireless data transmission in 2022. The company is also collaborating on the validation of Advanced Duplex wireless communication technology.
